“A different breed(er) altogether”
There will be many, I’m sure, who will not like what this post has to say. I am not the breeder for you.
There will be many who disagree with what this post has to say. I am not the breeder for you.
There will be some of the “elite” (sarcastic smile, here) who will think they need to educate me and/or bash me and my dogs. I am most definitely not the breeder for you.
Here’s the thing…
While I understand that the AKC has its “standard” and respect their rules as a breeder, I do agree that their “standards” are not based on the history of the breed. I will not get into a debate with anyone on why I feel this way. The only thing that I will say on this subject is this…I find it incredibly questionable (and quite ridiculous) that certain colors are not accepted as “standard” and therefore cannot be a show dog but those same colors now have boxes on the registration, therefore allowing them to be “AKC” registered. The truth is, I have done my research on Newfoundlands as a breed. No, not just the information that is fed by the AKC, but any and all research about this breed from its origination. I am sure that there are many who would say the same thing and completely disagree with me.
AND THAT IS OK…FOR YOU.
I will never force my opinions and beliefs on anyone. My conclusions are ones that I have come to over the past 15 years of studying this breed and they are MINE. I do not expect everyone to agree with me, but don’t disrespect me. Obviously, I am not the breeder for you if I do not check all the boxes on your list.
AND THAT IS OK, TOO.
There are plenty of breeders out there. I am sure you will find the perfect one if you continue looking.
I paid a great deal of money for my dogs. I made sure to do my research on their parents and checked their pedigree. I viewed all of their medical records and entered into contracts pertaining to their health as well. I did a full DNA panel on all of my dogs for 2 reasons,
1- To ensure they were 100% Newfoundland, and
2- To make sure that there were no genetic predispositions in my dogs that would prevent me from producing healthy pups.
I am blessed enough to have a vet that comes to our home to care for our Newfies and she is amazing! My dogs are seen for regular checkups and are up to date on all their shots. I tend to be a bit paranoid which is something that our vet knows and understands so I am always asking questions by email or doing video calls any time there is something I don’t know or am stressing over. My dogs have never had to be on any medication (aside from the monthly heart worm, flea and tick preventative that they are on). They are healthy and very happy.
They are spoiled more than you know. Our home has literally turned into a ginormous dog house. They are loved on, not only by me but also by our huge family. We all love these dogs. They get home cooked meals twice a day. They have no personal space boundaries at all. They do not know their size so they are often on our laps, beds, recliner, and sofas. They know better than to jump on the table or counters but will definitely stare us down until we can’t help but to share. I have 2 who love to lay in the bathroom as it’s the coolest place in the house. If you think they need to move for you to be able to use the toilet or take a shower, think otherwise. They completely expect you to just find your way around them. They love to get our cat going…sometimes it’s funny, sometimes we have to rescue our poor Ellie. They were all crate trained in the beginning but are now completely cage free and have total run of the place.
My dogs are family and this is what I am selling you…A happy and healthy addition to your family. That is why I charge what I charge for my pups. This is a family business that we pour our heart and soul into. This is my main job. Having 5 Newfies isn’t cheap and it’s very time consuming when done right. My grandpups are so loved. They’re spoiled from day one with LOTS of one on one time. We start their training early and try to have a few commands as well as their new names down pat by the time they go to their forever homes. They are vet checked early on and start receiving their deworming at 4 weeks. They will have already had their first shots (second shots also, if you choose to keep your pup with us for the extended care and training—8-12 weeks—) by the time of pickup. I didn’t buy Newfies with the intention of using them for money. I bought them because I just became obsessed. I knew early on that I wanted to breed as I’ve been a part of that world for most of my life. And to be quite honest, it was the only way to keep my family and friends from thinking I had gone crazy. “I know I already have 1 but if I get a male, I can breed them and have puppies so I can turn it into a business!” was WAY easier than, “Hey listen…Yes! I am getting another giant Newfie because I just want to and no one is going to stop me”. So I did my research, found and purchased my babies and even though I was never really convinced that I could turn it into a business, here I am. This has become my life I feel so blessed! What started as a dream, turned into a mission, that is now an accomplishment…I am literally living my dream and it shows. My past puppies speak for themselves. ❤️❤️❤️
If what you are looking for is an AKC Show standard dog, we are not for you. You don’t have to be ugly about it. Just because I am not the right breeder for you doesn’t mean I don’t want you on my page or to follow us and our babies. They might not be what you are looking for but they are some pretty awesome Newfies that deserve all the attention and love they can get.
I hope I haven’t been too offensive with this post. My objective is not to offend but to confidently share how I see my dogs and reassure anyone in question that they are extremely well cared for and have had NO health problems at all. The most important thing to me is making sure that our pups go to homes they will be well loved in. Not for money or attention but as a lively, happy and healthy member of your family.
That is my mission as a Newfoundland breeder.
There are many Newfoundland breeders out there…if you don’t like me or how I breed, you have the whole internet at your fingertips to find a new one. You won’t change my mind about the way I am with my dogs so there is no need to reach out with negative opinions or your version of education.
